Chelsea Go Invincible and Savy King Collapses Mid-Game

Plus, Denver officially get green light on $70,000,000 stadium

Welcome to this week’s edition of Goalside Gossip!

If last weekend was pure NWSL mayhem, this one turned the dial to 11—crowning glory, club history, and a medical scare that stopped us in our tracks. Chelsea officially locked in their dynasty status with a flawless WSL title win, just as Washington broke Chicago hearts in stoppage time. And yes, Kansas City are still goal-happy—ask Bay FC how that felt.

We soaked up every confetti-strewn second live from Stamford Bridge as Chelsea lifted the trophy (yes, we’re still buzzing). Angel City’s Savy King suffered a terrifying on-field collapse, while Denver made waves of its own—becoming the latest U.S. city to greenlight a women’s soccer stadium, with $70 million on the table.

Oh, and in case you missed it: the Wave and Thorns clashed in a red-card-fueled draw, and Portland left it late. Let’s get into it. 👇

  • NWSL: Chicago Red Stars vs Washington Spirit (2-3)

  • NWSL: San Diego Wave 🟥 vs Portland Thorns (1-1)

  • NWSL: KC Current vs Bay FC (4-1)

Chicago Red Stars vs
Washington Spirit (2-3)

Rosemonde Kouassi starred for the Washington Spirit with a goal and an assist in a dramatic 3-2 win over the Chicago Stars on Saturday. Kouassi forced an own goal from Ally Schlegel to open the scoring, netted her first NWSL goal before halftime, and set up Gift Monday’s 80th-minute winner. Chicago responded twice through Julia Grosso and former Spirit defender Sam Staab, but couldn’t hold off a late Spirit surge.

San Diego Wave 🟥 vs
Portland Thorns (1-1)

San Diego Wave drew 1-1 with the Portland Thorns in a dramatic clash at Snapdragon Stadium. Kimmi Ascanio, just 17, opened the scoring with a diving header in the 6th minute off a Perle Morroni assist. But a red card to Kennedy Wesley in the 41st minute left San Diego down to 10. Despite heroic defending and Kailen Sheridan’s 150th NWSL appearance, the Wave couldn’t hold the lead — Portland’s Jayden Perry converted a 95th-minute penalty to steal a point at the death.

KC Current vs
Bay FC (4-1)

The Kansas City Current delivered a statement 4-1 win over Bay FC on Mother’s Day, staying perfect at home and reclaiming the top spot in the NWSL table. Debinha led the charge with a dazzling first-half brace — including a stunning free kick — while Bia Zaneratto and Temwa Chawinga added goals of their own. Hailie Mace racked up two assists, and Vlatko Andonovski celebrated his 90th career league win. Bay’s Penelope Hocking pulled one back, but KC’s early dominance sealed the deal in front of a roaring sellout crowd.

Where We Stand So Far

The NWSL table is heating up after eight weeks, with the Kansas City Current leading the pack at 18 points thanks to a league-best +12 goal difference. Orlando Pride and Washington Spirit are close behind, both in top form. San Diego and Angel City round out a tightly contested top five, while defending champs Gotham sit mid-table, struggling for consistency. At the bottom, expansion sides Utah Royals and Chicago Stars are still stuck on just 4 points each, both with a single win and the worst goal differences in the league. It's chaos in the middle and crunch time at the bottom.

Chelsea Go Invincible & Are
Champions Once again

Chelsea lifting their fourth straight WSL trophy

Chelsea FC made history by completing the 2024/25 Women's Super League season unbeaten — the first team ever to do so in a full 22-game campaign. Their 1-0 win over Liverpool sealed a sixth-straight title and capped off a dominant year with 19 wins, 3 draws, and a record-setting 60 points. While past undefeated runs by Arsenal, Man City, and Chelsea came in shorter seasons, this one stands alone for its consistency and scale. Head coach Sonia Bompastor called the achievement "a moment you only live once."

Arsenal finished a distant second, 12 points behind the champions, but ended their season with a thrilling 4-3 win over Manchester United. Mariona Caldentey, who was instrumental in Arsenal’s campaign, was named the first-ever WSL Player of the Season. As Chelsea celebrates a legacy-defining year, the rest of the league will be left chasing a nearly flawless standard.

How Things Ended

Chelsea vs Liverpool
Live By Goalside Gossip

Armed with a press pass, Diana brought us the
match’s pulse straight from the pitch.

This past weekend, one of our amazing interns (Diana) got a chance to see the Chelsea vs Liverpool match live and write us a Goalside Gossip exclusive. Here’s what she had to say about Chelsea’s commanding win:

Chelsea ended their historic season with a narrow victory at home to Liverpool. Chelsea, once again experimenting with a back three, were off to a slow start in the first half with Liverpool dominating the initial 15 minutes, with Sjoeke Nusken’s saved header the Blues’ only shot on target. There were end-to-end scenes just before halftime, with chances from Olivia Smith and Marie Höbinger spelling trouble for Chelsea. Wieke Kaptein attempted to reply, but skied a shot above the woodwork.

Chelsea were more dominant in the second-half, with Bompastor reverting back to a 4-3-2-1. Yet, much of the same continued – chances that couldn’t be converted. But the Blues’ grit and determination prevailed in stoppage time, as substitute Ashley Lawrence leveled a defense-splitting pass to Aggie Beever-Jones who fired past Rachael Laws at the near post – the Blues’ 100th goal in all competitions this season.

The afternoon also included some heartfelt goodbyes to WSL mainstays. Liverpool captain and former Blue Niamh Fahey played her final minutes of professional football, while Chelsea honored departing Wales legend Sophie Ingle and goalkeeper Zecira Musovic.

Angel City’s King
Collapses Mid Game

King collapsed and was stretchered off the field immediately

A frightening scene unfolded during Friday night’s NWSL match between Angel City and the Utah Royals when 20-year-old defender Savy King collapsed in the 74th minute due to a “medical event.” Medical staff rushed to her side, reportedly administering CPR and using an AED before she was stretchered off the field. The game was paused for several minutes as players from both teams looked on in visible distress, later coming together in a powerful moment of prayer led by Utah’s Alex Loera — a close friend of King’s. Afterwards, Angel City confirmed that the 20-year-old Southern California native was alert and responsive, able to be with family, as medical crews continued to evaluate her and transported her to a local hospital.

Royals head coach Jimmy Coenraets expressed discomfort with continuing the game, which ended in a 2-0 win for L.A., calling the decision to play on “tough” given the emotional toll. He isn’t alone in this feeling, as other stars such as Trinity Rodman also expressed anger with the NWSL’s decision to continue the game. King, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2024 draft, has started every match for Angel City this season and remains in the hearts and thoughts of the NWSL community.

Denver’s City Council
Approve $70M Stadium

Denver has been fighting pushback and hesitation from city council members for months

Denver is one step closer to building one of the first stadiums in the U.S. dedicated solely to women’s sports after the City Council approved a $70 million deal to support a new NWSL stadium. Backed by the team’s ownership group and Mayor Mike Johnston, the plan would see the city fund land acquisition and site prep for a 14,500-seat venue near Santa Fe Yards, just off I-25. Despite some council members expressing hesitation, the proposal passed with 12 votes in favor.

The stadium would be a major milestone for women’s sports infrastructure, signaling a new level of investment in the NWSL’s long-term future. While this approval clears a key hurdle, the deal still faces further negotiations and development stages. If finalized, Denver’s new franchise will gain not just a team but a home designed to elevate the women’s game. See how the locals feel about this new stadium.
