In their first ever meeting, the Portland Thorns secured a thrilling 4-3 victory over the Boston Legacy in the highest scoring NWSL match of the season. Pietra Tordin, 22, anchored Portland's offense by netting her first career hat trick, making her the youngest Thorns player to achieve the feat, while Sophia Wilson helped build an early, commanding lead.

Portland held their ground despite losing head coach Robert Vilahamn to a 58th minute ejection, surviving a fierce second half rally fueled by goals from Bianca St-Georges, Alba Caño, and Amanda Gutierres.

The Washington Spirit suffered a heartbreaking 4-3 loss to the North Carolina Courage on Saturday night after a massive second half comeback fell just short. The Courage came out swinging at Audi Field, taking a 3-0 lead inside 15 minutes through an early strike from Ashley Sanchez and a quick brace from Evelyn Ijeh. At 14 minutes and 13 seconds, it was the fastest 3-0 lead in club history.

A wave of halftime substitutions flipped the momentum. Trinity Rodman sparked the rally with a trademark finish for her ninth goal of the season, a new single season career high, Sofia Cantore quickly added a second, and Rebeca Bernal sent the home crowd of over 14,000 into a frenzy with a dramatic 90th minute equalizer.

But just when it looked like the Spirit had rescued a point, Courage captain Natalie Jacobs found space in the final third deep into stoppage time and slotted home only her second career goal, capping off a wildly entertaining seven goal thriller.

The Denver Summit snatched a late 2-1 victory over the third place Utah Royals at Centennial Stadium, exacting revenge for a road loss earlier in the season. After a gritty, scoreless first half that saw Denver defender Kaleigh Kurtz make history as the first NWSL field player to start her first 150 career appearances, the action cracked open in the 52nd minute when Yazmeen Ryan broke the deadlock.

Utah looked to have stolen a point when Tatumn Milazzo found an 89th minute equalizer, but Denver captain Janine Sonis had other plans. Deep into stoppage time, Sonis curled in a stunning free kick, the first in the Summit's history, capping a one goal, one assist night and securing all three points at home.

Kansas City Current midfielder Debinha made history on Saturday night, becoming the NWSL's all time leading scorer across every competition. She got there with her 83rd career goal in the Current's 1-1 road draw at the Houston Dash.

The moment arrived just before halftime in the 44th minute, when Debinha found the back of the net off an assist from Croix Bethune.

The goal moved her past Seattle Reign's Lynn Biyendolo, with whom she had been tied. It was also her 59th regular season finish, good for a share of fifth on that leaderboard, and it keeps her in rare company: she and Christine Sinclair are the only players to have scored in every NWSL competition there is.

The NWSL has started strictly enforcing a footwear sponsorship policy that penalizes players for wearing cleats with unauthorized, visible logos. Commissioner Jessica Berman frames it as setting a minimum standard so brands actually pay players for the promotional value of being seen on the pitch. Any manufacturer other than Nike, the league's exclusive apparel partner, has to pay the league a fee and guarantee at least $5,000 in cash to the athletes it sponsors.

The intent is more money for players. The rollout has meant fines. Athletes wearing New Balance, Lotto, Adidas, and Puma without an authorized deal or properly covered logos have been hit with warnings and penalties between $500 and $1,000. Team equipment managers have reportedly been painting over and scraping off branding to keep players compliant.

The NWSL Players Association (NWSLPA) has filed a formal grievance on behalf of the affected players, which pauses collection of any fines until the dispute is settled. This kind of commercial model is standard across the big U.S. leagues, but the abrupt enforcement here has caused real friction. The league is still negotiating with outside footwear brands, and the grievance will decide how much of the cost lands on players.

On a recent episode of The IX Sports Podcast, host Kathleen Gier unpacked some major updates from NWSL Commissioner Jessica Berman's midseason presser. The biggest headline is definitely the 2027 calendar: the league is pushing opening day all the way up to February 11. The goal is to carve out a long summer break for the World Cup while riding Super Bowl weekend traffic on ABC and ESPN. It is a smart cross promotion play, but as Gier pointed out, a February start means a brutal winter chill in a lot of cities and a painfully short offseason.

On a brighter note, Berman highlighted how much momentum the league has at the gates. Clubs are averaging 11,174 fans per match at the midway point, the second highest average attendance in NWSL history, trailing only the 2024 campaign.

The commissioner also touched on the league's stance regarding transgender athlete inclusion. Berman kept things straightforward, noting that the NWSL's current practice is simply that every active player on the pitch has been cleared as eligible to play. She emphasized that the league isn't rushing to write new rules in a vacuum; they are closely watching how other sports bodies navigate this space, and any future policy changes will be hammered out in close partnership with the Players Association.

The beloved Apple TV+ series Ted Lasso has officially returned for a highly anticipated fourth season, with the titular coach now taking the helm of AFC Richmond's newly formed women's club. The season premiere, which dropped on August 5, kicks off in Kansas City, the hometown of both the fictional coach and lead actor Jason Sudeikis. The NWSL features prominently in the new storyline, with the opening episode notably showcasing the Current's landmark CPKC Stadium.

To celebrate the show's integration of the NWSL, several real life professional players walked the red carpet at the premiere events. At the New York City premiere on August 4, East Coast clubs were well represented by Gotham FC players including Jordynn Dudley and Mandy Freeman, alongside team leadership. They were joined by the Boston Legacy, with Chloe Ricketts and Laís Araújo making the trip down with General Manager Domènec Guasch.

The Los Angeles premiere on July 27 drew heavy support from Riley Tiernan, Hannah Seabert, Karsyn Cherry, and Carina Lageyre of Angel City.
