Louisville Stumbles, Gotham Rises, Esther's NWSL Debut
Tune into today’s edition for a gripping recap of NWSL's latest fixtures, which saw Angel City in a nail-biter draw and both Gotham FC and Racing Louisville securing crucial victories. The field heated up with Racing Louisville's unexpected setback and Kansas City's push for a playoff spot. Additionally, immerse yourself in the inspiring journey of Spanish football prodigy, Esther González Rodríguez.
Racing Louisville vs Houston Dash (0-1)
Racing Louisville's playoff ambitions suffered a blow with a 0-1 loss to Houston Dash, ending their six-game unbeaten run. Abby Erceg, the team's captain, criticized their lack of effort and teamwork. The loss intensifies pressure on Racing to win their upcoming matches, especially with the Chicago Red Stars, to remain in playoff contention.
Gotham FC vs. Washington Spirit (2-0)
The Washington Spirit were defeated 0-2 by NJ/NY Gotham FC, with NWSL newcomer Esther González scoring both goals during her debut match. Despite both teams having a scoreless first half, Gonzalez broke the deadlock in the 65th minute and doubled the lead five minutes later. This marks the Spirit's second consecutive 0-2 loss, impacting their performance stats when conceding first. The Spirit's next match is at home against the Kansas City Current on September 30.
San Diego Wave vs KC Current (1-2)
The Kansas City Current solidified their playoff ambitions with a pivotal 2-1 victory over San Diego Wave FC. Early strikes from Debinha, assisted by Cece Kizer, and Kristen Hamilton, courtesy of a Kate Del Fava assist, set the stage for Kansas City's triumph. San Diego retaliated in the second half with a goal by Sierra Enge, but Kansas City's staunch defense and AD Franch's vital saves ensured they held on to the lead. As the NWSL season reaches its climax, Kansas City remains only four points adrift from a playoff spot with three fixtures left.
Portland Thorns vs OL Reign (2-0)
Portland Thorns FC clinched a 2-0 victory against OL Reign, buoyed by goals from Hina Sugita and Morgan Weaver. This triumphant result, amidst the cheers of a sellout crowd at Providence Park, positioned the Thorns atop the NWSL standings. Morgan Weaver's significant contributions this season were highlighted as she matched her career-best with her seventh goal. This win solidifies Portland's strong performance in 2023, particularly against their long-standing rivals, OL Reign.
Chicago Red Stars vs. Angel City (2-2)
The Chicago Red Stars drew 2-2 with Angel City after second-half goals from substitutes Ava Cook and Cheyna Matthews, who offset each of Angel City's leads. Angel City initially led with a goal from Ali Riley, but Cook's equalizer and Matthews' later goal ensured the Red Stars earned a point at SeatGeek Stadium. The match, watched by over 8,000 fans, witnessed both teams showcasing tenacity and skill, with Angel City having a slight edge in shots on target. The attendance was the second-largest standalone crowd in the Chicago Red Stars' history.
Orlando Pride vs NC Courage 🟥 (2-1)
San Diego Wave FC defeated the Houston Dash 1-0 in front of a crowd of nearly 25,000 fans, moving them into first place in the NWSL standings. The lone goal came from 18-year-old midfielder Jaedyn Shaw in the 57th minute, and this marked her 8th career regular-season goal, tying the NWSL record for goals by a teenager. Despite Houston playing most of the game with 10 players after Michelle Alozie's red card, Dash goalkeeper Jane Campbell made nine saves, taking her career saves in regular season play up to 402.
Esther González Rodríguez:
A Spanish Football Prodigy
Born on 8 December 1992 in the quaint town of Huescar, Andalusia, Esther González Rodríguez's journey in football began with passion and dedication. She started her career playing for mixed teams until 13, after which her dedication took her 250km away from home to join CD Algaidas, her first women’s team. With unwavering support from her father, who drove her five hours each way daily, she followed her passion and played for some of Spain's most historic clubs, including two spells at UD Levante and memorable stints at Atlético Madrid and Real Madrid.
Esther's international accolades are a testament to her prowess on the field. Making her senior debut for Spain in March 2016, she further showcased her talent by scoring a pivotal goal in Spain's 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup match against Costa Rica, marking Spain's second group stage win. Earlier, she had also participated in the 2009 U-17 European Championship, helping Spain clinch the runner-up position. But her journey was not without challenges. At Atlético Madrid, despite the team's significant achievements, she struggled for playing time against established names, and later at Levante, she faced setbacks before experiencing one of her best seasons, which eventually caught the attention of Real Madrid. Despite some tumultuous times at Madrid, she emerged as the team's record scorer and continued to prove her mettle.
The recent chapter in her illustrious career began with her signing to the NWSL club NJ/NY Gotham FC, marking a significant moment in the league's history. This move made Esther the second reigning World Cup champion from a country outside the U.S. to join an American pro women’s soccer team in its 22-year history. Known for her resilient nature, those close to her often say she uses adversities as fuel, always preparing and pushing herself to the limit. As she takes on this new adventure, Esther remains a symbol of dedication, talent, and the spirit of overcoming challenges.
