McCabe Reveals She
Stayed off Socials

Republic of Ireland captain Katie McCabe revealed she has stayed off social media following the announcement of her highly publicized transfer from Arsenal to WSL rivals Chelsea. The 30-year-old left-back signed a three-year deal with the Blues after rejecting a late contract offer from Arsenal in April, a move that sparked significant online backlash. Her parents have publicly spoken out against the abuse she received, and McCabe explained that she chose to delete or avoid social media to maintain her focus on her international duties and protect her mental health, emphasizing that people often forget players are human beings with feelings.
Despite the digital hostility, McCabe expressed empathy for Arsenal fans who are hurting after her 11-year tenure with the club, during which she made 305 appearances and won numerous trophies, including the 2025 Champions League. Ultimately, she stated that she needed to put herself first and felt ready for a new chapter in her career. Driven by a desire to continue competing at the highest level and winning trophies, McCabe is excited to join manager Sonia Bompastor's project at Chelsea as they aim to reclaim the WSL title next season.
Supported by her international teammates and manager Carla Ward, McCabe remains in a good place mentally as she transitions into this new territory. She reflected fondly on her growth as both a player and a person since joining Arsenal from Raheny United in 2015, noting that while the last few months were difficult, she has immense respect for her former club. Now, she is fully focused on the future, eager to bring her extensive experience to west London and contribute to Chelsea's continued success.
Beth Mead Calls Joining
City a “No Brainer”

England international Beth Mead has joined reigning WSL champions Manchester City on a three-year contract following a highly successful decade-long tenure at Arsenal. The 31-year-old versatile forward, who holds the record for the most assists in WSL history, made the move as a free agent after her contract with the Gunners expired. Mead joins a dominant City side that secured a domestic double last season, capturing both the WSL title and the Women’s FA Cup under Swedish coach Andrée Jeglertz.
Mead described the decision to move to Manchester as a "no-brainer," noting that City’s style of play perfectly suits her strengths and will help extract something extra from her game. After discussing the club's vision with Jeglertz, she expressed confidence that she can seamlessly fit into the squad and bring a fresh dynamic to the team.
The prolific forward leaves behind an impressive legacy at Arsenal, which includes winning a WSL title, three League Cups, and providing the crucial assist in the 2025 Women’s Champions League final against Barcelona. A standout on the international stage as well, Mead boasts 40 goals in 81 appearances for England, having recently helped the Lionesses secure back-to-back Women's European Championship titles in 2022 and 2025.
Sam Kerr Decides
To Join Gotham FC

Former Chelsea star and Australian forward Sam Kerr has agreed to terms to rejoin Gotham FC, marking her highly anticipated return to the NWSL. Currently a free agent, Kerr recently concluded a legendary six-year stint with Chelsea, where she won five league titles, six domestic cups, and tied the club's all-time scoring record with 116 goals. Despite not playing in the NWSL since 2019, the prolific striker remains the league's all-time regular-season scoring leader with 77 goals. Her return to the United States also aligns with her personal life, as she and her wife, American midfielder Kristie Mewis, recently married and welcomed a child together.
Kerr's journey back to Gotham FC is a homecoming, as she spent her formative professional years with the franchise when it was known as Sky Blue FC, earning league MVP and Golden Boot honors with the team in 2017. However, she returns to an organization that is vastly different from the one she left. Following a 2018 controversy regarding sub-standard player conditions and facilities, the club rebranded as NJ/NY Gotham FC in 2021, upgraded its playing venue, and recently announced plans for a customized training facility alongside potential future matches at NYCFC's upcoming stadium in Queens.
Financially, the move comes with unique roster management requirements for Gotham FC. Because Kerr sidelined for 20 months after tearing her ACL in January 2024, she does not currently meet the criteria for the NWSL's new High Impact Player rule, which allows teams to exceed the salary cap by up to $1 million for star players. To help accommodate her arrival under the standard cap, Gotham recently acquired $350,000 in allocation money by transferring defender Lilly Reale to Boston Legacy FC, clearing the way to bring the Matildas captain back to the American stage.

All American All Women Reffing Trio
Takes Center Stage at World Cup

An all-American, all-woman refereeing trio made history at the 2026 FIFA World Cup by officiating the Group A match between Czechia and South Africa at Atlanta Stadium. Head referee Tori Penso, alongside assistant referees Brooke Mayo and Kathryn Nesbitt, took center stage as the tournament's only all-female on-field officiating crew. This milestone marks only the second time in FIFA history that an all-woman team has officiated a men's World Cup match, following the trailblazing groundwork laid during the 2022 tournament in Qatar.
The historic assignment represents another major breakthrough for the accomplished trio, who are no strangers to elite-level milestones. They previously worked together as the first all-female on-field crew for a Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Final in 2025 and also oversaw the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup final. Individually, the match distinguished Penso as the first American woman to serve as the head referee for a men's World Cup fixture, capping off a rapid career rise that included becoming the first woman to referee a Major League Soccer match since 2000.
Will Putellas Choose the
USA or Europe?

Two-time Ballon d'Or winner Alexia Putellas is set to decide her next destination this week following her departure from Barcelona. The 32-year-old icon capped off her legendary 14-year tenure with her childhood club by guiding them to a historic quadruple last month, racking up 19 goals and 15 assists across all competitions. While London City Lionesses remain the front-runners to land the Spanish midfielder, with reports suggesting terms may already be agreed, two NWSL franchises are making a late push to hijack the deal before the American league resumes play on July 16.
The reigning NWSL champions Gotham FC and expansion side Boston Legacy FC are the two American clubs best positioned to sign Putellas. Both teams are urgently seeking a final decision so she can integrate into their upcoming mid-season training camps in early July. Meanwhile, a lucrative offer from an unnamed London heavyweight, likely Arsenal or Chelsea, is also in the mix, though Putellas is reportedly hesitant to join a direct Champions League rival that could face her beloved Barcelona in European competition.
Ultimately, London City Lionesses hold the advantage due to several key factors. Owned by billionaire Michele Kang, the club has already shown immense ambition by signing star goalkeeper Mary Earps, and their current lack of Champions League football eliminates any risk of Putellas playing against Barcelona. Furthermore, Mundo Deportivo notes that a move to London allows the midfielder to remain closer to her family in Europe, making England the most probable landing spot as she prepares to announce her final choice in the coming days.
