KC Current vs
SD Wave (2-2)
The bottom line: a 2-2 draw kept Kansas City's home unbeaten streak alive.
The Kansas City Current fought back from an early deficit to draw with league leading San Diego Wave FC at CPKC Stadium. San Diego took a swift sixth minute lead courtesy of Trinity Byars, but Kansas City surged ahead in the second half behind stellar play from midfielder Croix Bethune, who scored a brilliant 52nd minute volley before setting up Temwa Chawinga's go ahead goal in the 61st minute. Byars struck again in the 90th minute to notch her second goal and force a split of the points.
Despite the late equalizer, Kansas City extended its NWSL record home unbeaten streak to 24 matches, while also celebrating milestone appearances for defenders Izzy Rodriguez (100th regular season match) and Gabrielle Robinson (50th).
Denver Summit vs
Portland Thorns (2-1)
The bottom line: Denver's new stadium got its first win in style.
Denver Summit FC earned a historic 2-1 victory over the Portland Thorns, securing their first win at their new home, Centennial Stadium, and climbing to 10th place in the NWSL standings. After Portland took a 1-0 lead in the 25th minute via a Sophia Wilson penalty kick, Colorado native Janine Sonis equalized for Denver deep in first half stoppage time.
Debuting as team captain in front of her home crowd, midfielder Lindsey Heaps helped Denver dictate tempo throughout the match before young forward Natalie Means scored her first professional goal to seal the housewarming victory for head coach Nick Cushing's side.
Gotham FC vs
Seattle Reign (3-2)
The bottom line: Gotham FC pulled off one of the biggest comebacks in franchise history.
Gotham FC rallied from a two goal halftime deficit, following a long weather delay, to defeat Seattle Reign FC 3-2 at Icahn Stadium. After Seattle seized an early 2-0 lead through goals from Mia Fishel and Maddie Mercado, Gotham FC mounted a relentless late attack.
Led by Esther González, who scored goals in the 81st and 94th minutes, both assisted by Jaedyn Shaw, Gotham drew equal and surpassed Sam Kerr as the club's all time leading regular season goal scorer. Eight minutes into stoppage time, Rose Lavelle curled home the match winner off a pass from Kerr, sending Gotham FC (9 wins, 3 losses, 3 draws) to 2nd in the NWSL standings.
Boston Legacy vs
Washington Spirit (1-2)
The bottom line: the Spirit are your new NWSL leaders.
The Washington Spirit climbed to the top of the NWSL table this week, earning a 2-1 victory over expansion side Boston Legacy FC. The Spirit established control early in the first half with a 25th minute header from defender Tara Rudd, followed six minutes later by Trinity Rodman's seventh goal of the season off a through ball from Gift Monday.
Boston managed to pull one back late when Sammy Smith scored in the 88th minute, but the Spirit held off the pressure through stoppage time to secure their 9th win of the season and claim first place in the league standings.

Looking Ahead at the
2027 Women’s World Cup

The road to Brazil 2027 starts now, with the USWNT working through key roster questions under Emma Hayes
Roster questions ahead of Brazil
With less than a year until the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil and qualifying matches just four months away, the U.S. Women’s National Team (USWNT) faces several key roster and tactical questions under head coach Emma Hayes. Fresh off testing themselves against World Cup host Brazil and preparing for upcoming friendlies against top ranked Spain, the U.S. is focused on building depth and team chemistry. While Hayes has successfully expanded the player pool, lingering uncertainties around key injuries, goalkeeper selection, and managing high pressure host atmospheres present ongoing challenges.
Injuries and depth at every position
A primary focus for Hayes is integrating returning star forwards, Trinity Rodman, Sophia Wilson, and Mallory Swanson, back into the mix alongside emerging talent, forcing less experienced players onto the roster bubble. Furthermore, the starting goalkeeper spot remains an open contest between Claudia Dickey and Phallon Tullis-Joyce. Key injuries also complicate preparation: crucial center back Naomi Girma and high scoring forward Catarina Macario remain sidelined, testing the squad's depth in critical positions as players like Lilly Reale and Croix Bethune push to secure their spots.
Players who look like locks
Despite these ongoing adjustments, analysts point to several players as crucial locks for the 2027 tournament roster. Defender Emily Fox stands out as the backline's most consistent presence, midfielder Rose Lavelle provides elite game changing creativity when healthy, and young forward Alyssa Thompson has established herself as a core, reliable attack option. As the USWNT balances its established veterans with a dynamic new generation, navigating these questions will be essential to reclaiming the World Cup title.
Behind the Scenes
of Free streaming

Victory+ is streaming NWSL matches free of charge, no subscription required
The bottom line: Victory+ is betting free access grows the audience faster than paywalls do.
With the National Women’s Soccer League expanding to 16 teams and 248 total matches in 2026, the league faced a growing media challenge: fitting its schedule into a fragmented landscape of paid, subscription based streaming services. To increase accessibility, the NWSL partnered with Victory+, an ad supported, free to stream platform carrying 57 matches this season.
Spearheaded by CEO Neil Gruninger, Victory+ aims to eliminate paywalls to convert casual sports enthusiasts into dedicated NWSL fans, leveraging digital flexibility to broadcast multiple simultaneous games without linear channel restrictions.
Victory+ is also differentiating itself through a focus on creator-led content and alternative broadcasts ("alt-casts") featuring influencers and former players like Kelley O'Hara and Ali Riley. Tailored toward Gen Z and younger demographics who prefer conversational formats, these alt-casts have already driven significant viewership spikes and attracted new users to the platform. Additionally, the platform is emphasizing athlete-driven storytelling and cross-promoting NWSL content to fans of other sports, such as regional hockey and football, who use the service for free.
Are the Spirit the Most
Stylish Club in Football?

Domo Wells turned Spirit merch into some of the leagues best selling streetwear
The bottom line: Domo Wells turned Spirit merch into some of the league’s best selling gear.
Dominique (Domo) Wells, the creative director for the Washington Spirit and founder of the creative firm Dead Dirt, has emerged as a major cultural force behind the NWSL’s most stylish merchandise. Leveraging a decade of experience as a DJ and music curator, Wells utilizes a culture first approach to bridge local community vibes with sports apparel. Her vision helped the Spirit win the NWSL's Club Retail MVP award, with Washington boasting six of the top eight best selling jerseys in the league, led by star forward Trinity Rodman.
Rather than agreeing to a standard one-off collaboration, Wells pushed the Spirit to give her creative freedom over multi-capsule rollouts starting in 2024. Her design philosophy prioritizes local authenticity and streetwear aesthetics that extend beyond matchdays, appealing to both dedicated supporters and non-sports fans across the D.C., Maryland, and Virginia (DMV) area. By creating versatile, fashion-forward clothes rooted in regional identity, Wells has turned club merchandise into a strategic entry point for expanding the team's fanbase.
Recognizing her impact, the NWSL tapped Wells to design exclusive, knit-polo merchandise for all 16 league teams ahead of the 2026 season. The "Dead Dirt x NWSL" collection highlights each city's unique local culture with a elevated, unisex feel, achieving rapid commercial success with nearly half the line selling out by mid-June. As the NWSL rapidly grows toward 18 teams by 2028, Wells' authentic blend of sports, fashion, and local heritage offers a blueprint for how women's soccer clubs can build lasting brand loyalty.
