María Sánchez's Record NWSL Contract:
María Sánchez has made a significant mark in the world of women's soccer by signing a historic $1.5 million contract with the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL). This landmark deal not only highlights Sánchez's exceptional skills and value as a player but also represents a major milestone in the progression and recognition of women's soccer. The contract sets a new standard for player compensation in the NWSL, reflecting the increasing investment and commercial growth in women's sports. The Houston Dash has re-signed forward María Sánchez through 2026, with an option for 2027. This deal emphasizes her vital role in the team's future, with her impressive performance contributing to eight goals in the season, including four goals and six assists. Sánchez, having played every regular season match in 2023, has expressed excitement about returning to Houston. She joined the Dash in 2022, playing a key part in their first playoff appearance, and has had a successful international career with the Mexican Women's National Team, recently leading them to a gold medal at the Pan American Games. Her career includes notable stints in LigaMX Femenil with Chivas and UANL Tigres Femenil, and collegiate soccer at Idaho State and Santa Clara University.
Lorne Donaldson Has High Hopes for Chicago
Lorne Donaldson has been a key figure in Jamaican women's football, particularly recognized for leading Jamaica's national team to the Women's World Cup quarter-finals. His strategic approach and adept coaching skills have been instrumental in enhancing the team's performance on an international level. Donaldson's contributions go beyond just coaching, as he has been pivotal in developing the sport in Jamaica, nurturing talent, and promoting the growth of women's soccer. His impact extends to shaping a competitive team, underscoring his deep understanding of the game and player development. Prior to starting his coaching career, Donaldson was an accomplished soccer player whose career started in Kingston, Jamaica. Donaldson earned call-ups to the Jamaican National Team where he played for four years before playing for Metropolitan State University in Denver. A three-time All-American, Donaldson was inducted into Metropolitan State University’s Hall of Fame in 1995. Off the pitch, Donaldson was the co-founder of the Black Soccer Coaches Association of America helping to bring African and Caribbean players and coaches a better understanding of the American football culture. Coach Donaldson will join the Chicago Red Stars in the coming weeks to help the coaching staff prepare for the upcoming NWSL Draft Friday, January 12.
Philip Poole Named First Head Coach of Super League Carolina
Philip Poole has been appointed as the first head coach of Super League Carolina, Charlotte's new professional women’s soccer team. The team, set to start its inaugural season in August, will play at American Legion Memorial Stadium. Poole, currently the USWNT assistant coach, will join the team following the SheBelieves Cup in April. His experience includes various coaching roles in the U.S. and a background in Charlotte soccer. Super League Carolina, part of the newly announced United Soccer League Super League, represents a significant step in expanding professional women's soccer in Charlotte.
Philip sees his role as the first head coach of USL Super League Carolina as a significant opportunity. He brings a unique perspective and experience, aiming to develop the team into a competitive force in women's soccer. Poole's vision includes building a strong technical team and fostering a community of women's soccer fans in the Carolinas. Five Things We’ve Learned About the WSL So Far

Player Spotlight: Fran Kirby
Fran Kirby, an English forward born in 1993, began her career at Reading, where her remarkable talent was quickly evident. In 2015, she moved to Chelsea in the Women's Super League, becoming a pivotal player for the club. Known for her agility and scoring prowess, Kirby has played a key role in Chelsea's numerous successes, including multiple WSL titles and FA Women's Cup victories.
Internationally, Kirby has been a standout player for England. She was instrumental in England's run to the semi-finals in the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup and continued to impress in subsequent international tournaments. Her ability to change games with her skill and intelligence has made her a fan favorite and a critical player for the national team.
