Welcome to this week’s edition of Goalside Gossip!

Four matches left and the table is finally sorting itself out. San Diego punched their playoff ticket in Orlando, Debinha put up a hat trick in Kansas City, and Boston went to Providence Park, found themselves a player up inside 25 minutes, and left with four goals.

Off the pitch, Emma Hayes named her squad for two friendlies against Spain and left out two of the more obvious names and the playoff math is getting ugly for the teams on the bubble, and Amanda Gutierres broke a record nobody was tracking. The Gradient Corner is back too, with this week's number.

Let's get into it.

Gotham FC vs
Angel City (1-1)

In a rainy 1–1 draw against Angel City FC, Gotham FC clinched a home quarterfinal playoff match and expanded its lead atop the NWSL standings to four points with three games remaining. Jaedyn Shaw opened the scoring in the 66th minute off a Rose Lavelle assist to net her 10th goal of the season, making her just the third player in club history to reach double digits in a single regular season. Although Taylor Suarez scored a late equalizer for Angel City in stoppage time, Gotham FC extended its home unbeaten streak to 12 matches in front of 13,475 fans, putting head coach Juan Carlos Amorós’s team on the brink of securing a top-two seed heading into the international break.

Portland Thorns 🟥 vs
Boston Legacy (2-4)

In a chaotic match, Boston Legacy defeated Portland Thorns FC 4–2 in Portland, capitalizing on a major turning point when USWNT forward Sophia Wilson received a straight red card in the 22nd minute for pulling Laís Araújo's hair. Alba Caño and Sarah Schupansky capitalized on the player advantage to give Boston a 2–0 lead, but Portland fought back with a penalty from Pietra Tordin and a debut professional goal from Shae Harvey. However, Boston super-sub Amanda Gutierres sealed the victory by scoring twice off the bench, setting an NWSL single-season record with six substitute goals and ensuring Portland's playoff-hosting ambitions took a significant hit.

KC Current vs
Bay FC (5-1)

The Kansas City Current powered past Bay FC with a dominant 5–1 victory at CPKC Stadium, fueled by a historic second-half hat trick from midfielder Debinha. After Bay FC took an early fourth-minute lead via Karlie Lema, Haley Hopkins equalized for Kansas City in the 24th minute before Debinha took over after halftime, scoring three goals in a 30-minute span to become the first player in club history to net a hat trick entirely in one half. Temwa Chawinga capped the scoring with an 89th-minute breakaway goal, helping Kansas City match the NWSL single-season record of three hat tricks, become the first team in league history to score hat tricks in back-to-back weeks, and extend their record home unbeaten streak to 31 matches as they moved up to fifth place in the standings.

Orlando Pride vs
SD Wave (1-2)

The Orlando Pride fell 2–1 to San Diego Wave FC at Inter.co Stadium after conceding two early first-half goals. San Diego established a quick 2–0 advantage through Lia Godfrey’s fourth-minute strike and Gia Corley’s tap-in following a defensive turnover in the 22nd minute. Orlando cut into the lead shortly after halftime when Barbra Banda converted a 52nd-minute penalty kick for her team-leading 17th goal of the season—extending her club single-season record and tying for the fourth-highest single-season goal total in NWSL history. Despite a strong second-half push, interim head coach Yolanda Thomas’s side was unable to find an equalizer, leaving the Pride with 33 points as the league pauses for the international window.

THE GRADIENT CORNER

Powered by

Every week we pull one number from Gradient Sports, who grade every duel, pass, cross, and shot in the NWSL. This week: one on one defending.

Grade Leader: Avery Patterson, 90.2

The best one on one defender in the league plays for the Houston Dash, and Emma Hayes just called her into the USWNT squad for Spain.

1v1 Defending, Top 5 in the NWSL

  1. Avery Patterson, Houston Dash, FB, 90.2

  2. Ryan Williams, NC Courage, FB, 89.3

  3. Hal Hershfelt, Washington Spirit, CM, 87.9

  4. Amelia Van Zanten, San Diego Wave, FB, 86.4

  5. Shinomi Koyama, NC Courage, CM, 85.2

Gradient Insight: Patterson tops all 63 fullbacks and the whole league, and she got there on 205 duels, more than anyone else in the top five. North Carolina have two of the five. And Orlando's Oihane Hernández, who spent Friday night chasing San Diego's front line, sits 10th.

Hayes Names Her
Squad for Spain

Emma Hayes named 26 players for two friendlies against Spain, October 10 at Audi Field and October 13 at Subaru Park in Chester. After three straight camps without a single uncapped player, she called in four: goalkeeper Jordan Silkowitz, midfielder Evelyn Shores, and forwards Pietra Tordin and Trinity Byars.

Ashley Sanchez is back for the first time since early 2025, which is hard to argue with given she's tied the NWSL single season scoring record. Naomi Girma and Sam Coffey returned from injury, though Girma picked up a knock the same day the roster dropped and Utah's Kate Del Fava was called up from the U23s on Sunday to replace her.

Here's what stood out to us. Three of the four uncapped players turn up in this issue's recaps. Tordin took Portland's penalty, Byars set up San Diego's opener, and Silkowitz was the goalkeeper Kansas City put five past. Hayes is picking current form over reputation, and she said as much: this window is about development, not results.

The omissions say the same thing. Hayes was asked directly about Jaedyn Shaw and Ally Sentnor and pointed to the size of the pool. The detail we'd watch most closely, though, is that Mallory Swanson is listed as a midfielder in this camp rather than a forward. Less than a year from a World Cup, that is not a small thing.

The Playoff Math
Is Getting Tight

Two teams are through. Gotham got there a while back, and San Diego punched their ticket Friday night in Orlando. Eight of 16 make the playoffs, there are four matches left, and Decision Day runs October 30 to November 1.

The top is close to settled. Gotham sit on 54 points, San Diego 51, then Washington and Utah level on 46, Kansas City 44, Portland 43, and Angel City 42. Seven teams, and the gap from second to seventh is nine points.

The squeeze is in the middle. Kansas City still have Utah and Washington to play, and the best argument for them is that they haven't lost at home all season. Portland just lost at Providence Park to the side sitting 14th, which is the kind of result that decides who hosts a quarterfinal and who travels.

At the other end it's already over. Boston are mathematically eliminated, Orlando are done at 10-14-3, and Bay FC sit 14th on 26 points. For those three the rest of the season is auditions and draft position.

Gutierres Breaks the
Super Sub Record

Amanda Gutierres came off the bench at Providence Park, scored in the 88th minute and again three minutes into stoppage time, and set an NWSL record doing it: six goals as a substitute in a single season.

It sounds like a quirk until you look at what it was worth. Boston went into Portland sitting 14th and left with three points against a team fighting to host a playoff match. Both goals came after the 85th minute.

Boston are out of the race themselves, so the record won't change their season. But Filipa Patão has found something genuinely useful in her first year with an expansion club, and the rest of the league has four games to work out what to do about a striker who keeps arriving late.

Banda Hits 17
as Orlando Fade

Barbra Banda's penalty on Friday night was her 17th goal of the season. That's an Orlando club record, it ties for the fourth highest single season total in NWSL history, and it's only the fifth time any player has reached 17.

It hasn't counted for much. Orlando are 10-14-3 and out of the playoff race, with Yolanda Thomas still listed as interim head coach after Seb Hines was let go at the end of August.

Banda signed through 2029 last month under the league's High Impact Player rule, so the cornerstone is locked in. The problem is everything around her. Orlando have one of the best forwards in the world and spent a season unable to build a team that could use her.
