SD Wave vs
Washington Spirit (2-1)

In an exciting fixture at Snapdragon Stadium, San Diego Wave FC secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory over the Washington Spirit. The Wave jumped to an early lead when Trinity Byars found the back of the net in just the 6th minute of play. The Spirit responded in the 32nd minute with an equalizer from Rebeca Bernal, keeping the match deadlocked well into the second half. Just as the game seemed destined for a draw, San Diego's Kimmi Ascanio delivered a dramatic game-winner in the 88th minute to secure all three points for the home side.

Denver Summit vs
Orlando Pride 🟥 (3-1)

Denver Summit FC captured their first-ever franchise home victory with a 3-1 win over the Orlando Pride at DICK'S Sporting Goods Park. Denver opened the scoring in the 10th minute when Eva Gaetino finished off a corner kick, and Janine Sonis doubled the advantage with a penalty kick in the 54th minute. While you noted a red card on Denver's side, it was actually Orlando's Angelina who was sent off with a direct red card in the 63rd minute. Despite playing down a player, the Pride briefly pulled a goal back through Barbra Banda in the 76th minute, but Sonis instantly shut down the comeback bid by scoring her second goal of the night just a minute later to seal the win for the expansion side.

NC Courage vs
Chicago Stars (4-0)

The North Carolina Courage put on a second-half clinic against the Chicago Stars FC at WakeMed Soccer Park. Following a tightly contested, scoreless first half, the Courage completely took over after the break by striking four unanswered times. Evelyn Ijeh broke the ice in the 47th minute, with Ashley Sanchez (60'), Ally Schlegel (64'), and Manaka Matsukubo (85') quickly piling on. The match did feature a notable milestone for Chicago with the return of star forward Mallory Swanson to the pitch from maternity leave, though it wasn't enough to spark the Stars' offense against a relentless North Carolina defense.

Portland Thorns vs
Angel City (0-0)

Defenses reigned supreme at Providence Park, as the Portland Thorns FC and Angel City FC battled to a gritty 0-0 draw. Both sides struggled to carve out decisive opportunities against highly disciplined backlines, resulting in a physical stalemate where neither team could find a breakthrough. Angel City had to weather several intense moments, picking up yellow cards via Nealy Martin in the 11th minute and Emily Sams in the 81st minute. Ultimately, both goalkeepers kept clean sheets through the final whistle, forcing the rivals to split the points. Sams spoke at the press conference after the match, noting that they have unfinished business.

What is Utah’s
Secret Superpower?

After consistently finishing near the bottom of the NWSL table in previous seasons, the Utah Royals have shocked the league in 2026 by climbing into a tie for second place with a 6-2-2 record. In just ten matches under manager Jimmy Coenraets, the team has already matched its entire win total from last year and sits only one point behind the league-leading San Diego Wave. Players and staff attribute this historic turnaround to an exceptional locker room culture and genuine camaraderie, famously dubbing their tight-knit connection and ego-free mutual support as their collective superpower.

This rapid ascent has defied grim preseason predictions from major outlets like ESPN and CBS Sports, which widely projected Utah to finish at or near the dead-bottom of the standings. Embracing an underdog mentality, the Royals have instead forged an eight-match unbeaten streak using a uniquely constructed roster that values collective chemistry over flashier superstar names. The balanced squad features a mix of reliable league veterans like defender Kate Del Fava, impactful international attackers like Cloé Lacasse , and homegrown talents like Courtney Brown and Brecken Mozingo.

A major driving force on the pitch is 32-year-old Japanese international forward Mina Tanaka, who recently propelled the team to victory with a dramatic late game-winner against Racing Louisville. Highly praised by teammates for her elite soccer intelligence, flawless first touch, and deep humility, Tanaka embodies the joy and work ethic fueling the club's rise. As Utah prepares for a highly anticipated Rocky Mountain rivalry match against the expansion Denver Summit FC ahead of the upcoming World Cup break, the Royals remain focused on keeping their momentum alive to capture the franchise's first-ever playoff berth.

Where Should Sam Go?
Ranking Best and Worst Teams

The NWSL is bracing for a massive shakeup. Australian superstar Sam Kerr has announced her departure from Chelsea FC this summer, and all signs point to a spectacular return to the league where she is already the all-time leading scorer. At 32 years old and eyes locked on the 2027 World Cup, Kerr will be looking for the perfect home.

Here is a breakdown of where she is most likely to land—and which clubs are probably out of the running.

The Best Landing Spots

1. Seattle Reign FC

If there is a team that desperately needs Sam Kerr, it’s Seattle. The Reign have endured a brutal attacking drought, scoring zero goals in five games. They have the roster talent to compete, but they completely lack a clinical, game-changing finisher. Kerr wouldn't just solve their goal-scoring crisis; she would instantly become the face of the Pacific Northwest franchise.

2. Orlando Pride

Orlando is already a powerhouse, anchored by Golden Boot leader Barbra Banda. Adding Kerr to the mix would create an absolutely terrifying "super-duo" for opposing defenses. While fitting both elite strikers into the lineup might present some tactical puzzles, it’s the ultimate "champagne problem" for a club looking to return to its championship-winning ways.

3. Angel City FC

Kerr has the kind of massive star power that is tailormade for Los Angeles. With Hollywood glamour, a passionately loud fanbase, and the financial resources to back up a blockbuster contract, Angel City has the perfect environment to match her off-field brand and on-field brilliance.

4. Gotham FC (The Ultimate Glow-Up)

Before their 2021 rebrand, Gotham was Sky Blue FC—a struggling franchise where Kerr carried the weight, winning the 2017 MVP and Golden Boot. Today, Gotham is a bonafide contender with two NWSL Championships under its belt in the last three seasons. Returning here would be a poetic "back to the future" move, backed by a club that now has the clout and cash to afford her.

The Least Likely Destinations

* Chicago Stars FC: Kerr won back-to-back Golden Boots here in 2018 and 2019, but a reunion is doubtful. The rebranded Stars are currently rebuilding, recently relocated their training focus, and already have Mallory Swanson locked down as their high-priced franchise centerpiece.

* Boston Legacy FC: As a brand-new expansion side focused on a long-term, highly physical project, Boston simply isn't established enough to attract a win-now veteran of Kerr's caliber.

* Bay FC: Plagued by injuries and currently adjusting to a youth-and-development mindset under new head coach Emma Coates, the California side is unlikely to drop a massive contract right now.

* Racing Louisville & Houston Dash: Both franchises are lumped together for financial reasons. Because both organizations are actively seeking new ownership or external investors, staging an expensive bidding war for a global superstar is virtually off the table.

Are Gotham Moving to New York
& Is It a Good Thing or Bad?

Gotham FC is currently in ongoing discussions to move from New Jersey into New York City FC’s future $780 million, 25,000-seat stadium, Etihad Park, in Queens by 2028. The reigning NWSL champions currently play at Sports Illustrated Stadium in Harrison, New Jersey, where their secondary-tenant status has created severe scheduling conflicts. This summer, the venue's owners prioritized men's World Cup watch parties over NWSL matches, forcing Gotham to play its most commercially lucrative July dates on the road.

A move to Queens could significantly boost Gotham's attendance, which currently lags behind the league's top tier despite the club's on-field success. While the New Jersey stadium is relatively close to Manhattan, inconsistent weekend transit makes the trip feel like an excursion for casual fans, whereas the future Queens site offers direct New York City subway access. Furthermore, Etihad Park’s high-tech, digital-first design, featuring flexible LED screens reminiscent of the Las Vegas Sphere, would allow Gotham to seamlessly project its own visual identity on match days.

Despite the clear benefits, relocating would not entirely solve Gotham's scheduling challenges, as they would remain a secondary tenant to an MLS team in a league where only one franchise completely controls its own venue. However, the move represents a massive win for the NWSL's broader global optics. As expansion fees skyrocket and competing clubs like the Denver Summit and Boston Legacy FC invest heavily in their own soccer-specific infrastructure, placing a star-studded, championship-winning franchise directly inside the New York City limits signals that the league is ready to operate on a world-class stage.
