The Table

As of Matchday 6, Chelsea sit atop the table comfortably as the only undefeated team left. Manchester City, Tottenham, Liverpool and Arsenal are tied for second with three wins, one draw and one loss. Meanwhile towards the bottom, West Ham, Brighton and Everton all have one win, one draw and three losses. And lastly, Aston Villa are sitting at the bottom with five straight losses and not even a draw yet this whole season so far.

Goal of the Month for October

Arsenal’s Cloe Lacasse has won the October goal of the month award after hitting a stunning late equalizer against rivals Manchester United.

Saying Goodbye to a WSL Legend

Emma Hayes, the highly decorated manager of Chelsea Women's team, is set to leave the club at the end of the season for a new opportunity outside of the Women's Super League (WSL) and club football. The announcement came as a shock, but for many, the end of Hayes' era at Chelsea has been a matter of when, rather than if. Hayes has played a crucial role in the rise of women's football in England, achieving numerous successes with Chelsea, although the Champions League title has eluded her. Her decision to move on, amid personal challenges and changes at Chelsea, aligns with her commitment to balancing motherhood with the demands of club management. The possibility of international management, particularly the US women's national team, offers a new challenge and a chance for a more normal day-to-day life with her son, Harry, reflecting Hayes' holistic approach to management.

Aston Villa’s Woes Continue

Aston Villa endured another miserable afternoon last Saturday, suffering a comprehensive 6-0 defeat at the hands of a ruthless Chelsea, with the club still yet to pick up a point. At the heart of manager Carla Ward’s growing list of problems is a defense that is leaking goals at a concerning rate. After just five games to date, Villa have already conceded 16 times – 43% of their total goals against last season. The extent of the problem was on full display against Chelsea, with the backline and protecting players caught flat-footed, prone to turnovers and slow to second phases all too often. Alisha Lehmann’s lackadaisical attempts to track back allowed Niamh Charles to maraud down Chelsea’s left while Fran Kirby was able to unlock Villa’s increasingly deep block on many occasions. Successful teams more often than not are built on a sturdy defense and, with teams picking up points around them, Ward needs to find solutions quickly to take advantage of a run of winnable games ahead.

What to Look Forward to: Arsenal vs Bristol

Arsenal begins their defense of the Continental Tyres League Cup earlier than expected due to Champions League elimination, facing Bristol City in the group stage. Despite a recent WSL victory over Manchester City, Arsenal is likely to field a rotated squad, featuring players such as Kathrine Kuhl, Kyra Cooney-Cross, and Lina Hurtig. Bristol City, coming off a thrilling 3-2 win against West Ham, also anticipates rotating their team in the competitive group that includes Reading and Tottenham. While not the most anticipated fixture, it provides an opportunity for both teams to involve players who have seen limited minutes this season.

Player Spotlight: Rachel Daly

Rachel Ann Daly, a prominent English footballer, has left an indelible mark on the football landscape with her remarkable achievements in the 2022-23 season. Having transitioned from the Houston Dash to Aston Villa in 2022, Daly's impact was immediate and profound. Notably, she scored two goals in her competitive debut for Aston Villa, securing a 4-3 victory over Manchester City. This set the tone for a season that saw her net an astounding 22 goals in the Women's Super League (WSL), clinching both the Golden Boot and the Player of the Season accolades. Daly's versatility was on full display as she seamlessly navigated roles in defense, midfield, and attack, showcasing her prowess across the pitch.

In addition to her domestic success, Daly has been a consistent presence in the England national team, contributing significantly to their triumph in the UEFA Women's Euro 2022. Her adaptability was further highlighted when she started every game at left back during the tournament, demonstrating her commitment to the team's success in various positions. Notably, Daly's flexibility extends beyond her playing style; she willingly embraced a forward role during international friendlies, showcasing her willingness to contribute wherever needed. As England prepares for the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup, Daly's stellar performances, including a goal in a 6-1 victory over China, position her as a strong contender for the starting No.9 role, reflecting her consistent dedication to both club and country.

Daly's journey is not only marked by on-field triumphs but also by her resilience and adaptability in the face of challenges. The Leeds-born footballer has overcome obstacles, including being left out of squads and undergoing positional changes, with unwavering determination. Her ability to shine under diverse circumstances, coupled with her impressive goal-scoring prowess, makes her a standout figure in the world of women's football. As she looks ahead to the Women's World Cup, Daly's dynamic skill set, coupled with her prolific goal-scoring form, positions her as a key player to watch, embodying the spirit of excellence in the beautiful game.
