Inspired Italians sneak past Argentina with a late winner, while Germany and Brazil grab big wins to start off their 2023 World Cup campaign.

The Short Corner continues its’ Women’s World Cup Coverage. While we dream in the United States, others are fulfilling their dreams to represent their nations on the biggest stage in Australia and New Zealand.

Italy vs Argentina (1-0)

Italy secured a 1-0 victory over Argentina in their Women's World Cup opener, with Cristiana Girelli's 87th-minute header being the decisive goal. The 33-year-old striker, who came on as a substitute in the 83rd minute, made an immediate impact, beating the goalkeeper with a fine header. Argentina came close to a sensational start when Mariana Larroquette's bicycle kick narrowly missed the target in the second minute. Italy had to fight hard for the win, with both Ariana Caruso and Valentina Giacinti having goals disallowed for offside in a competitive first half. Goalkeeper Francesca Durante's save from a stoppage-time free kick ensured Italy earned three points, placing them atop Group G alongside Sweden.

Germany vs Morocco (6-0)

In their Group H opener, Germany secured a resounding 6-0 victory over Women's World Cup debutants Morocco. Alexandra Popp netted a first-half brace which announced her return to the big stage after her injury heartbreak in the Euro 2022 final. The match also witnessed a pair of unfortunate own goals from Morocco's Hanane Ait El Haj and Yasmin Mrabet. As the first Arab nation to compete in the Women's World Cup as well as being the lowest-ranked team in the tournament, Morocco faced a tough challenge. Brazil vs Panama (4-0)
